The cold air is drawn from outside to cool the fins directly:
The fins design optimize for air ventilation that enhance cooling performance:
Accelero S1 Rev. 2 features 4 thick copper heatpipes which connect directly from the GPU core. The heatpipes with sintered powder wicks provide ultimate heat conductivity. Heat from the GPU is rapidly dissipated through 32 fins that extend beyond the height of the graphic card. Optimized fin design allows better air flow thus removing the heat more effectively. Together with the bundled RAM heat sinks and voltage regulator heat spreader, Accelero S1 Rev. 2 provides an all-round passive solution that achieves the best cooling performance.

Never compromised on noise Install and forget about it – No moving parts means it is maintenance free. An extra pair of mounting clips provides extensive protection to the graphic card that prevents damage from improper handling. With the help of the new mounting design, Accelero S1 Rev. 2 is widely compatible with high end ATI and nVIDIA graphic cards.
Accelero S1 Rev. 2 can still be paired with the Turbo Module – the twin fans add-on, which further increases the potential power of Accelero S1 Rev. 2 with enhanced cooling performance under extremely quiet operation. Turbo Module helps boost up the GPU and memory overclockability, squeezing more graphic performance than ever before.

Arctic Cooling is a Swiss company dedicated to quiet CPU and GPU cooling. Back in the day, their VGA Silencer heatsinks were on top of the silent computing world, with Zalman's passive heatpipe GPU coolers being their only real competition. Arctic Cooling is now receiving accolades for their own
Despite a few draw backs, it is still very easy to recommend this cooler to anyone with a compatible video card. The performance is staggering, the noiseless operation is a blessing, and the $30 street price only seals the deal. The Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 Rev 2 receives our Upgrader's Recommenda
An Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 Rev. 2 with good airflow represents what can easily be called one of the best values in today’s high-end aftermarket GPU coolers. While it does not provide the absolute best cooling in the market, it surely represents a very good GPU cooler. You would be remiss if you d

My 5770 fan is noisy even when I'm not gaming. It's driving me nuts and was hoping this would solve it. I should have researched more before buying, but it was on sale for $15 so I bought it.
I bought this to replace the noisy and not very efficient cooler on my XFX 4870 (the later, cheaper, non-reference design version). The main heatsink works if you don't use the included plastic spacers for the main 4 screw mounts which caused it to make only 30% contact with the GPU core on my 4870. Just be careful not to over tighten the screws and crush the core. I had to remove the bottom black plastic frame to unblock one of SATA ports on my MA785GM-US2H. The thermal tape on the included ramsinks and VRM heatsinks is worthless like others have mentioned. A quarter of them fell off after about 10 mins. Fortunately my 4870 already has a push-pin mounted VRM heatsink and I had some leftover unused blue Zalman ramsinks (ZM-RHS1) from an ancient ZM80D-HP from 2005. They worked way better than the included AC ramsinks. My 4870 is now cool and quiet. Good thing I had some spare ramsinks and this cooler was relatively cheap ($20 on sale), otherwise I'd be more upset with it.

Used this to replace the stock sink/fan on my Radeon HD5770 and despite being passive it cools about as well but without the noisy fan. With the turbo module fans attached it dropped the temp by 10c. Much better than the stock cooling and much more quiet even when using the optional fans.

I was looking for an aftermarket passive cooler to replace the dreadful stock cooler on my old 3850, which always screw when under load. I came upon this cooler during a weekly sale and it was only $20, so I gave it a try. Bang for the buck.

My 4850 used to run at 105c for Dragon Age, causing computer shut downs, and after installing, highest it runs now is 55-56c. I am running it on passive mode too, so if you get the turbo modules, you can expect even more performance out of this cooler.
I installed this on an XFX Radeon HD4870 XXX card. Since it's the highest-end card that this cooler supports, I was afraid it might not cool it very well. I was proven wrong as my temps went down from 80ºC to about 50ºC. Under load, it goes up to around 62ºC, which is pretty good since I also have a Coolit water cooling system on CPU, so there is more heat than before inside the case. Obviously though, the case temp is higher now than before, but nothing serious. Just make sure you have good air flow and you should be fine (mine is so-so in my old Antec Super Lanboy).
installed this on my 9800gt (whos fan just cries too loudly when on load), and it worked just as expected. I am now looking for a fan to install along with this.
Ordered one of these for my 4850 about a year ago, dropped temps significantly when paired w/ 140mm fan. Bought another one of these to use on my 6850.....just need to find heatsinks for the VRM's.....AC charges waaaaay too much to ship me their VRM-001 kit. I wish NCIX would stock the VRM-001 kit :(
