For scientific computing. This platform is great. However, it is really important to understand the code you will be running to take leverage from multi-core cpu. Povray shows great performance but most applications don't scale so well.
AMD's Piledriver really are better suited for hardcore Multi-threaded apps like povray because they cost much lesser and offer relatively the same performance.
