With the CPU passive cooling technology, Synology DS1812+ achieves the high reliability system design. When one of your system fans malfunctions, the built-in system fan redundancy mechanism can extend service uptime by keeping the remaining fan running and your DS1812+ performing basic operations until the replacement fan arrives. The 2 LAN with failover support and hot-swappable drives will ensure continual service uptime should the drives need replacement or the unexpected LAN failure occurs. Robust & Affordable Scalability Up to 72TB
When the storage capacity of the Synology DS1812+ is nearing its limits, it can easily be expanded with the Synology DX5102. The Synology DX510 securely connects to the Synology DS1812+ via an eSATA cable of specially-designed connectors on both ends to ensure maximum throughput. The Synology DX510 can directly expand the existing storage on the Synology DS1812+ to a maximum 72TB capacity.
Unified-Architecture and Virtualization Ready
Synology DS1812+ runs on the novel operating system, Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM), which integrates file-level and block-level storage in one unified storage system. Comprehensive network protocol support (CIFS/SMB, AFP and NFS) assures seamless file sharing across Windows, Mac®, and Linux® platforms.
iSCSI is also supported as the ideal alternative to SAN solution for business. Affordable and cost-effective iSCSI allows large scale business to consolidate storage into data center storage arrays while providing hosts with the illusion of locally-attached disks. With the iSCSI support, DS1812+ provides a seamless storage solution for virtualization servers, such as VMware, Citrix, and Hyper-V.
Thin Provisioning is available for file-level iSCSI, enabling administrators to oversubscribe provision and then grow storage space as needed in safety. With Thin Provisioning, users are able to maximize the storage utilization to reduce the total cost of ownership for the storage system.
Full-featured Business Applications
The Synology DS1812+ runs on the renowned operation system, Synology DSM, offering applications and features designed specifically for SMBs. Comprehensive network protocol support assures seamless file sharing across Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms. Windows ADS and LDAP integration allows the Synology DS1812+ to quickly and easily fit in an existing business network environment with no need to recreate user accounts.
Directory Server package can turn DS1812+ into an LDAP-based directory server within minutes. IT administrators can bind other DiskStations to the directory server. With the same batch of directory user accounts or groups, employees can access all the DiskStations with the same user credentials.
Windows ACL support on DS1812+ provides much finer-grained access control and efficient privilege settings, allowing IT staffs to set up privileges to files and folders on DS1812+ through their familiar Windows user interface. The privileges set on Windows ACL will be applied to all access entries, including AFP, FTP, File Station, NFS and WebDAV. The secure privilege offers IT staff peace of mind, no worries about any loopholes.
Internet file access is simplified with the included encrypted FTP server and the web-based file explorer, Synology File Station. HTTPS, the built-in firewall, and IP auto-block support ensure file sharing over the Internet is protected at a high security level.
A wealth of additional features allows the Synology DS1812+ to replace several pieces of network hardware. Synology Web Station with support for PHP/MySQL® content allows for the hosting of up to 30 websites on a single Synology DS1812+. Synology Surveillance Station offers a centralized interface to safeguard the office environments by deploying IP cameras throughout the network. The built-in mail server turns a Synology DS1812+ into a dedicated mail service provider and the USB printer sharing capability minimizes businesses’ printing cost by sharing printing resources throughout the office.
Energy Efficient Design
Synology DiskStation are designed and developed with energy efficiency in mind. Compared with the average PC counterparts, Synology DS1812+ consumes only 50.6 watts in operation. The support of wake on LAN, scheduled power on/off and hard drive hibernation can further reduce power consumption and operation cost.

With support for up to 32TB of storage (and beyond with an expansion unit), great performance, a winning UI, and excellent data protection the Synology DiskStation DS1812+ is a near-perfect NAS, though it may be pricey for some.

As business owner and IT consultant, for my own business this is a fantastic unit. We have purchased two units now and use them for our Virtual Machines although good for any machine. The ISCSI protocol in Windows if fantastic and load a drive like it it local to the machine. On my virtualization machines which we have spent about 30K to date, this unit has sped up disk access by factors. My office also replaces disk on about a 3 year schedule. With this unit we just replace disk one at a time and let it rebuild. Then do the next. No down time.
Not for the faint of heart (cost wise) - but offers so much at such simple ease of setup. Upgraded ram to 3GB. File transfers from old 410J to this across the network through a managing client (not the best way to do things) was still able to saturate the Gb Ethernet. That was peak approx 60MB/s to the client and back out at 60MB/s. 5TB of data moved over in about 26 hours. Wow. And with the add on units - lots of room to expand. Populated with WD Reds and Seagate 7200rpm drives. Warning - the RAM upgrade was done after the data transfers were complete and needed to find 1066MHz DDR3 RAM - tried faster 1600MHz DDR3 and unit would not boot up.

This is a fantastic unit that does everything I wanted in a NAS and more. Outfitted mine with 6x WD20EARS and it's a great media server. Will probably drop in another one or two at some point in the future and/or add the expansion chassis. Even setup the LDAP server to keep my usernames and password, and UID/GID in sync across my various systems in the house, this was very easy to setup with this unit.
