This is a good NIC for the price, its small size ensures easy installation on crammed motherboards, it is very cheap and can be PMd for less.
The only downside is the lack of support for 9k jumbo frames, but I still was able to have an average 50MB/s sustained write speed on a SATA2 drive (10GB file).

I looked for the cheapest gigabit adapter, and found this. The card worked fine as soon as I plugged it in. It does not seem to require cat6 cables to achieve speeds higher than 100 Mbps, which is a problem I have had on other adapters. Apart from a driver issue caused by windows update, the card works fine, and I am quite happy with it.

A good cheap PCIe gigabit network card, especially for the price after PM. Realtek 8111 chipset, but wouldn't expect anything more for the price. Only works at gigabit speeds after you update driver using windows update . Included win7 drivers makes it run at 100mbps.
I bought this at another retailer because of an immediate need. It worked out-of-the-box on Red Hat Linux 5 with no need for additional drivers. This card uses a Realtek chipset which is the lowest costs gigabit chipset, but I wouldn't expect any different from a sub-$20 NIC.
