TechReport's review of the Asus Xonar DX.
A very high-quality sound card at half the price of the Xonar. the DACs aren't as good, but still very high quality. Editor's choice.
Ths card gives excellent performance at a fair price for the features. It's main drawback is the lack of DTS and limited connectors in that The only ways the Xonar DX came up lacking are in its limited number of I/O jacks meaning that you are sharing the digital-out with the line/mic which is inco
Tech report editors choice. "The Xonar DX is more than just a fantastic sound card. It also cements Asus as the most credible—and importantly innovative—alternative to Creative's dominance of the PC audio market. Enthusiasts have been waiting for such an alternative for a long time. "

old motherboard does support 5.1, but when i upgraded to z906, nothing really changed, i got a bigger bang than the old z10, that's all. but clearly the motherboard is taking a toll, because it just kept restarting the speakers. so i got the dx7.1.
there hasn't been a big improvement over the sound quality, i'd say 20% tops, but the base is better.

I purchased this as an alternative to my motherboard's on-board sound solution after it started developing some weird issue. Rather than try to fix that issue, I decided to dodge the whole thing by installing one of these and I do not regret it one bit. The control panel also allows for numerous more custom settings than my on-board sound did. All in all, a great, moderately low cost upgrade over on-board sound.

This is the card you need if you want to set up an HTPC, if your Mobo is not equiped (older) to handle Dolby Digital, or home theater sound, or even if you want to upgrade your onboard sound. I tried three different cards from Asus, before I found this one. There is a difference between the price points of this and the cheaper cards. The DX, will decode Dolby Digital in Full 5.1 and 7.1 right out of the box, where as the cheaper models just seem to have a pass through for this feature, which I believe needs some kind of software decoder to make anything work...not this one though, but be aware if your using anything newer than Vista you will have to do some updates from Asus's website for the audio driver, and you will have to change some of the audio settings in the control panel as well for Windows 7. But once up and running... it works great, the sound quality is perfect....love this card! This review was modfied by poster f 03-02-13 10:34 AM

So this card gives me sort of mixed feelings. On the one hand the sound quality is amazing. There's no arguing that. The only problem is that the power connection on it seems to be quite finnicky. For example, sometimes when I move something around in my case the power cable gets touched just a little bit, and when I restart my computer I get a message saying that the power is unplugged, when it clearly isnt. You have to have the power connector plugged in perfectly, and yes, I mean perfectly. That being said, once it is plugged in correctly the card is great. Its just annoying if you tinker with your components a lot, because you'll find yourself constantly having to power down your computer and play with the power connection a bit.
I will just say what I think. I have always used creative x-fi. The last few years the support and drivers haven't been that good so I switched to asus Xonar. I can't hear the difference at all. The drivers and software still seem like an afterthought. So after saying that. I think both sound great, I just can't hear or see the difference. I would go with what one is cheaper at the time.

No issues - I am using the alternative Uni drivers. Great sound and no complaints. I am using it for gaming mostly in 5.1 surround sound. The sound is very clear and it was easy to set up on Windows 7 with the Uni drivers I found. I hears the stock drivers aren't very good - I cannot say either way as I did not try them. Lower cost would have been nice say $60 but it is still worth it as is - 5 stars.
