...but if you are running Windows be prepared for issues.
|
I thought at first glance this would be a fantastic deal but I'm not going to take a chance with any 3TB HD -- because there are problems supporting more than 2.19TB. http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/reviews/pc-peripheral/3258206/western-digital-caviar-green-3tb-review/ I'll just stick to great deals on 2TB drives, easier.

A lot of space. Not very expensive ($138)
|
None so far.

Now the warranty is only 2 years for Green drives (previously 3 years), but Seagate offers only 1 year. I had to update 'Intel rapid storage manager' because the OS (Windows 7 Pro) only showed the disk as 746GB unit. I'm using it as secondary disk, mostly for backups.

Slow compared to red/black WD drives

Owned 2 of these for a couple years, never had any problems (with any WD drive actually). Price keeps dropping, fairly quiet & efficient. Slower than the red/black lines of drives but for the price a great deal.

Looks nice.
|
Didn't work for me. BIOS sees it as a 801.6GB HDD. Win Vista x64 Disk Management shows only 746GB.
|
I tried connecting this to the Intel ICH10 controller on my mobo. BIOS shows it as a 801.6GB. Why? Don't know. I have a few other WD 2TB Green drives connected to the same controller, and they are all recognized just fine, so I expected that this one will also be seen as at least a 2TB drive. But no, it only shows as 801.6GB Will return it and get a 2TB drive instead.

Price Vs. capacity is great, silent...
|
slow speeds but it was not designed for high transfer speeds, still fast enough to stream tons of content.
|
WD has established a more then reliable name in manufacturing disk media. They spent a lot of time building a good name and and work hard to protect that name. knowing this I buy WD drives with confidence I am getting a device I will be happy with.
Every hdd is going to fail at some point but WD drives in reasonable usage conditions relay do consistently hit the advertised MTBF numbers. If they say this drive will last on avgrage 1,000,000.0 hours "fictional number" it really will along as you give it the operational conditions suggested on the website.

Slower than the WD Blacks Only one year warranty

I have two of these and they worked with no problems at all, right out of the OEM package.
Format to a slightly larger block size, and used to backup large archived files (7Zip many small ones into a single file). The larger block size makes file transfer faster, but will waste space on small files.

Harder to use 3TB drives in Windows, but that's the same for all 3TB not just this one
|
Bought this to consolidate the contents of my other drives before building a NAS server. Worked perfectly in that capacity, AND it only took about 13 hours to transfer the entire contents of this drive (which was full by the time I'd copied everything off of every other drive in my house) on to the NAS server. I figured it would take a week!

- Tons of storage space - Very low powered - Hardly no noise compared to my WD Black 1Tb - Nice speeds for a 5400RPM drive
|
- First drive shipped needed to be RMA'd, but 2nd drive works as expected - Not ultra-fast like an SSD
|
So my first drive made ticking and scratchy sounds, but after sending it back for RMA, the 2nd one works as expected. The drive is quite, low-powered, with tons of space, and is surprisingly fast. I get a max of 110 mb/s writes, and I think around 150mb/s reads (not 100% sure on the reads). But for a 5400rpm drive, I'm impressed and fully satisfied. This drive will make for a great media storage drive.

- Somehow data corruption occurred under Win7 x64 using GPT - Older data recovery tools will not work - Better to have MB bios to support this large drive

Good drive size to store data, but it's better to have MB to support the drive. Didn't have a good experience, after loosing data, because of disk corruption.

Those drives aren't the fastest drives around (compared to the Black line of drives) but they do the job for mass storage in general. I use mine for a backup of an external drive and then store them in a little safe (for safekeeping ;)

Capacity, reasonable value l $139.99
|
More expensive than a year ago, and less warranty.
|
Seagate has a point with "green where it counts" in regard to power consumption. However, 5400 RPM still seems the sweet spot for bulk storage as performance is adequate while minimizing noise and vibration/resonance (although that's less of a problem with recent models). Two year warranty is not as good as three, but better than one. Would recommend.

* Quiet, can't hear it in my case (Corsair 550D) * Fast sequential reads/writes * Cheap considering the current state of HDD market * Perfect for bulk storage on a home machine
|
* Load/unload (head parking) is way too aggressive at stock settings (parks every 5 seconds, which is excessive and leads to wear and tear)
|
Needed another 3TB drive and the Hitatchis are now impossible to find and Seagate has a joke of a warranty (1 year) so I went WD for the first time in years. Running for bulk storage in my PC, not in RAID so TLER is not an issue for me.
Drive is behaving perfectly so far, the only issue is the head parking is ridiculous (power saving is the rationale). Google WDIDLE3 tool and you can change the firmware to park the heads only after 300s (5min) of idle time which is much more reasonable and should extend drive life. That is the only reason I am giving it 4/5.

None so far but I anticipate the little lag when you try to access the drive and it's been unsolicitated for a little while but it's normal with the ''green'' from WD. Might be slow as an install drive. Brought my Windows Experience Index down from 7.8 to 5.9, although the score isn't really relevant as my OS is on an SSD.

I have had very good luck with WD drives, and so I don't consider any others. I have not experienced any problems whatsoever with these 3tb green drives (I have owned several 3TB and 2TB versions), but they are the cheapest built drives on the market (as are the Seagate drives), so if these drives don't show up DOA, it's still not a smart move to consider them as reliable long term storage unless you are running RAID-1. Having said that, I have a 2TB green that has ran flawless for 2 years now.

RAID glitches now and then
|
A year ago I purchased 4 of these drives to upgrade my server running in a Raid-1 array. I'm using a Highpoint RocketRAID 2300 4 channels. I have been using this configuration for close to 3 years. The only thing I found about those drives is that after my box has been up for 2-3 month without a shutdown, the RocketRAID looses the second array and cannot rebuilt it. All I have to do is shutdown the server for a full minute, power everything up and I'm back up while the RAID rebuilt the array.
This setup did not cost me much and has been serving me very well.

Concerned about the reliability of the drive
|
I purchased 4 drives to install in a patriot 4-bay SAN. The SAN formats the 4 drives in a RAID5 configuration. The next day, the SAN is beeping and complaining about a drive failure. I remember the old days when this could happen but today, it's hard to believe. Maybe it's just my luck to get a bad one. I will get it replaced and buy 2 more as spares. I just wanted to share my experience.
